Many high school students have set their sights on college. Their parents, teachers, and even their peers have stressed the importance of higher education for these youths. In order to prepare for entering college a student must do many things. A major portion of the application will be the personal statement essay.

What is a personal statement?

A personal statement is a statement that speaks to who you are as a person and your personality. The statement asks and wants answered the question of why you are fit for the college that you are applying for. It is an opportunity to let the university know that you are beneficial to their school and that the education you will receive will help to benefit your future career goals.

Writing your personal statement:

Writing your personal statement can be a challenge. The difficult part is remaining genuine throughout the paper writing process. There are a number of ways in which you can do this. Take for instance you have a humorous personality. You can add subtle humor to your essay.

Cut out the hype:

Keep in mind that you do not have to pretend to be someone else in order to impress the judges. Simple essays that tell a story with little hype can appeal to the admissions officers as well. If your life is not considered movie worthy that is ok. Talk about your interest and why you decided to enter the program that you are applying for.

Figuring out what works:

If you have a great story in why you chose to pursue and education at a particular college or program then tell it. A good story will appeal to the judges every emotion. A great story will also stick in their memory and you are likely to win them over. Make sure you go into detail about what happen, where it happened, and how the situation changed your life. If you do not have a great story to tell about why you chose the school or program, then you can talk about your accomplishments. Make sure to choose one or two good ones. You can even tell about a volunteer experience that changed your life.
