Successful College Application Essays Need Time And Practice

Time and practice are two of the most important parts of writing a successful college application essay. Why do they take so much time and energy to complete? Because there are a lot of different ideas that you need to focus on in order to get your message across to your audience. Here are some of the reasons that you need to take so much time in order to write successful essays.

  1. You need to learn to be concise. Being concise is a very difficult art to perfect. Many essays run between 400 and 600 words, and you really don’t want to push too much further than that. Learning how to express your thoughts in an intelligent and concise manner may take a lot of practice to get down, especially if you are used to writing long essays and multiple-page papers.
  2. You need to be able to express who you are. There thousands of people who apply to these colleges. How can you make yourself an individual? Sure, you can share all of these awesome things that you have done, but I’m willing to bet that there’s a couple hundred other people just like you. Leave those things out of your essay because they’re covered in other parts of the application. Instead, you need to learn how to express yourself in such a way that you stand out from the crowd. The reason this takes so much time is because you basically have to paint a picture of yourself using words.
  3. You need to learn how to write well. You’ve been learning how to write throughout your whole college career. Don’t blow all of that time and energy spent on papers by being lazy on your college essays. Don’t allow yourself to ramble, don’t cover too much in your short essay. Develop one large idea in detail instead of trying to develop several small, unrelated ideas. Make sure to check for punctuation, spelling, and grammar issues. Also, do fact checking. If you have to write something about a particular book you’ve read, make sure you know who the author is for certain, don’t just guess. For certain, focused essays, you may have to do a quick web search to make sure you’re telling the story correctly.

As you can see, it takes quite a lot to be able to write a successful college essay. It takes time, energy, patience, and practice in order to get it right. It’s okay to go through several drafts of an entrance essay before you submit one; actually, it’s better because it shows that you actually care about what you’re doing.
